Summary and Critique:
This book contains both common and not-so common similes, metaphors, idioms and proverbs, all featuring animal themes. The sayings are grouped according to the animal(s) they mention and displayed alongside comical illustrations. The only critique of this piece is that it is not highly informational in nature. The topic of this informational book is sayings in the English language. The meanings of these phrases could be cited as factual, but there is no reference listed. Additionally, the illustrations feature personified animals distracting from the nonfiction nature.
Due to the usage of figurative language, this book would work best as a large group read-aloud in order to allow teachers to clarify meaning of more difficult sayings. I would use this as a transition book or time filler, selecting two or three quotes at the end of the day or after recess as children are coming in. While many of these saying use more advanced, figurative language, with scaffolding this could be used at a third grade level.

Gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status:
While some of the quotes may contain references to SES or gender, but it does not explicitly discuss any of these topics.
