Garrard’s Sapphire and Diamond Engagement Ring

Cataloguing Kate’s jewelry collection wouldn’t be complete without a post about her engagement ring.

As many already know, Kate’s ring used to be belong to her late mother-in-law. In 1981, Lady Diana Spencer chose the stone “from a selection presented to her by the then Crown jewellers Garrard of Mayfair. It cost £28,500 but, unusually for a choice by a member of the Royal Family, it was not unique and any member of the public could buy the same ring from the Garrard catalogue”. *

The ring was made by Garrard in London, and consists of one large oval Ceylon sapphire surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds. It is set in white gold.

Some reports state that the sapphire is 12 carats. However, Ayvee of Diana’s Jewels believes that it may be 9 carats.

Here it is on Kate:

The ring was thought to be priced at £28,000 in 1981. Today, it’s deemed to be worth £250,000 or more, placing it just at the $500,000 mark.

Sapphire and Diamond Earrings

Shortly after she became engaged to William, Kate started wearing these sapphire and diamond earrings.

They sort of remind me of daisies. The way the diamonds cluster around the sapphire is reminiscent of a daisy flower. From what I have learned, this design is called a “halo setting”.

Many people believe (and I also believe this). that these earrings once belonged to Princess Diana. She wore them as stud earrings. They were reset with a diamond post so Kate could wear them as drop earrings (which is more her style).

Take a look at them side by side:

I definitely think these are the pair Kate was given. The most obvious reason these were chosen is because they go with her engagement ring.

A single sapphire cabachon set in what might be gold is surrounded by ten small diamonds. On Kate, there is one diamond attached to a post so that she might wear them as drop earrings.

Kate wears these quite frequently. They are her go-to pair of earrings whenever she wears a blue outfit.

These earrings match the necklace Kate wore during the engagement announcement.

These earrings look to be from the same collection as the Elsa Peretti necklace. It’s been difficult to receive absolute confirmation that they are Elsa Peretti designs (because I think these are from a previous collection and no longer available for sale), but I would bet money they are from the same designer.

A bezel diamond set in yellow gold holds the post earring to the earlobe. Beneath this dangles a sapphire cabochon set in yellow gold.

Here they are again on Kate during her arrival in Canada (July 2011).

I’ve noticed that she hasn’t been wearing these as much nowadays. She’s been relying on her sapphire and diamond drop earrings when she needs blue toned earrings to complement blue outfits. I would love to see these on her again!

When Kate and William made their engagement announcement, Kate very cleverly chose blue jewelry to match her gorgeous sapphire and diamond engagement ring. Knowing that the ring was to be the main attraction, she went for a simple diamond and sapphire necklace.

Tiffany’s describes the necklace as “18k gold with a sapphire cabochon and two round brilliant diamonds.”
